Currently repainting all the doors and frames in the house but the current hinges look past their best, covered in oil based paint from years ago.

I could simply replace the hinges but wondered if there was an easy way to remove all the old paint. When I say easy, I don't mean wire wool and a toothbrush; I was thinking plopping the hinges into some chemical solution for a time with the paint falling off.

Thanks.

Bang them in the oven gas mark 9 for half an hour.

Use a hot air gun and strip them, mole grips allows you to handle a hot hinge.

You will end up losing the protective laquer. Additionally they might well just be (yellow) zinc coated rather than brass. Sand them and they might end up "iron" coloured.

Hinges are often fitted to the door first and the chippy puts one screw in, then moves the position of the other holes to "manipulate" the door to meet the frame.

Once you remove the hinges it might be more prudent to replace them with better quality ones.
