Hi the battery warning light on my 1996 clio is constantly on: Originally I thought this was because the belt between the engine and alternator had come off but since refitting it and charging the battery it still stays on- does this mean the alternator is kaput?

If you connect a volt meter across the battery, with the engine running what does it read? Should be approx 14v, from your description it makes me think it is a faulty alternator.

might it not be the diodes on the alternator? (only asking)

I will put a meter on the battery- if not 14V, what would it mean?

Approx 14v ;) . Would mean the alternator is goosed.
Don't know about wether or not it is just the diodes, most garages will just replace it with an exchange unit.

In most towns there is usually a vehicle electrical specialist and, if you took the alternator to them they would be able to test the unit and advise. Unlike some of the dealers, who, understandably I suppose, want to sell new components, the independent electrical centres are usually well equipped to repair.
