Hi we have a Ravenheat white star gas combi boiler model LS 80 T or LS100T which we think is about 4 years old.

It was losing pressure every day so the engineer came and said there was a leak on the overflow pipe which he fixed, since then the hot water started to go hot and cold, First it comes out hot, then it goes cold or lukewarm then hot again and so on. before they fixed the overflow leak the hot water worked fine. The heating also sometimes goes off and an orange ignition light is on so we have to press this to start it working again.

The engineer came out again and replaced both the temprature sensors for the hot water and heating but this didn't work. he then said it must be sludge build up a he said a 'blocked plate heat exchanger' . Does this sound right? he said we are not covered by insurance for this so we have to call out another firm to fix it and it could be a half day job. Any advice would be appreciated also is this a costly fix? thanks

Sounds a classic case of blocked plate HE to me. I would guess at around £200-£250 to replace this.

Thanks for replying Dave, british gas have been out and have actually condemed it as the previous owners had it fitted outside the house! apparently it is unfixable and so we have to get a new boiler inside. never mind! thanks anyway
