Composite decking

Was going to put some composite decking together on some steps. Is putting them together best with the clips, but I did hear it is a bit tricky to it that way and some people just screw them into the wood underneath. Any tips?

I have composite decking. I used the nylon inserts for the bulk of the flat area. Our decking has a grove in each of the meeting faces to accept a plastic insert which is then screwed down but I aused the decking screws for the steps. That said we used the extra deep boards for the steps so there was no need for the nylon inserts.

How deep are your steps and boards?
