hope you know which cable is which in that last shot now its all been disconnected
I do. I put them into terminal blocks and connected back the BC bit and the bulb. They should be good to go as soon as I find a new light that has the space. Hard to tell from pictures. Screwfix is the easiest to return. I will go for one of their's. Maybe this, which allows bulb changing.

Here's a good video guide:

Second failure of a light with no space at the back. This is the screwfix unit. I will be able to return this one.

I generally carry kosnic blana fittings for maintenance work, they are shell with a GR10q lamp base in (like on a 2D lamp) but no control gear, and they are intended to be used with the LED conversion lamps that you'd fit into a normal 2D after bypassing the gear. Plenty of space in the back, although the lamp holder is mounted centrally, if you need to bring cables in in the centre then there is clearance under it, so you can unscrew it, dress cables under it and re secure it. You can also get an emergency pack (you don't need this, OP) that has a flylead to the lamp and gives a subset of the LEDs in emergency mode, and the lamps incorporate the green charge LED which is only used if you fit the em pack.

Phew, that was lucky. Trial and error wasn't going to work. I was ready to throw in the towel.

Next dilemma: my searches suggest bathroom related electrical work is notifiable. Is this true? It's with in my ability to change an existing fitting. But, a notifiable work would require an electrician. Even if I were to get someone to do it, I would insist on the kosnic unit, to save some unexpected surprises.

While looking around for interior pictures of the kosnic unit , I found this alternative which might work. It looks to have space inside for terminal blocks. The wattage and light colour are switchable also. It's £20 from ebay or direct.

This looks like the easiest to install. £14 for 20W. Light colour limited to cool white.

I settled on the ledbrite for its central cable entry point, and changeable light colour and brightness.

Here's the kosnic unit for anyone interested:
