We're about to take up approx. half (25 sq m) our living room carpet to replace the felt underlay (6mm thick?) with Acoustilay (heavy rubber-backed sound insulating underlay - 15mm thick). We can't do the whole room for various reasons. Question: where the new underlay abuts the old felt underlay what can we do to make the difference in height as unobtrusive as possible?

We'll be re-laying the existing sisal type carpet ontop afterwards. If anyone has any experience of this type of situation and any useful advice we'd much appreciate it - we've had no luck persuading carpet-fitters that this is a job they would enjoy...

Thank you

well if its half the room why not put the half you remove on the half you leave?

or you could put up a notice "mind the step"

Because we can't remove the carpet or underlay in the other half of the room - because of sliding doors, fitted cupboards, freezer cabinet etc. even temporarily
