Dishwasher fault

Hi I have a whirlpool 4501/5 the light flashes 4 times . It sounds like it wants to work but doesn't pump the water in. It pumps it out and makes all the right noises. I have cleaned the sump with boiling water and a toothbrush but this has made no difference . Please someone help.
