If I run a main earth from the consumer unit to the incoming water supply, in 10mm cable clipped above external ground level, does it need to have any extra protection. Ref to any laws please this is within part P

Cheers.

Is the earthing conductor being run outside?
If this is so, it should be protected mechanically and against corrosion.
Also your earth label should be suitable for the environment.
Sorry edit "earthing conductor" to bonding.
Still needs to be protected against environmental conditions.

It needs to be properly insulated, that's for sure.

Or it will become an extraneous-conductive-part, and require bonding where it enters the house near to the CU....

I have editted my original reply;
Sorry edit "earthing conductor" to bonding.
The cable will still ideally need to be protected against environmental conditions.
