The 1 salient point out of the whole debate.
1 person says the contintent is in crisis (regarding refugees)
1 person says that is wrong, the whole world is in crisis over the subject.
So who is right? Simple answer obviously.
Who wants to understand the reason behind the crisis and sort the issue(s), and who wants to just simplify it and just make it somebody elses problem. To answer that, you have to ask if we have helped cause the crisis in the 1st place?
We should be working out how to stop the crisis, not to blame those that are the RESULT of the crisis.

Both make valid points. Murray agrees that asylum should be granted to those who are genuine and to reject those who are economic migrants.

The was a time when any foreign national who wanted to enter Britain had to apply for a visa.
To get a visa you had to have a valid reason for wanting to come to Britain, your character was also taken into consideration and if you were deemed to be a liability or not of good character you didn't get in.
There was also the concept of the undesirable Alien which meant that foreign nationals who misbehaved could be deported quickly.
Nowadays once someone gets into the country illegally they can claim asylum which means it can take years and a lot of money to get them removed, that is if you can get them removed at all.
