I intend to dry-line the solid walls in a very cold room.

Should I put a polythene 'vapour control' membrane against the brick first. and then fix the battens over that, giving a 25mm or so 'cavity' before using the 50mm Kingspan.

Then the plasterboard fixed through the Kingspan to the battens with fairly long screws.

And should the plasterboard be foil-backed, or is it not necessary with the membrane?

No need for poly on the wall, just batten, add insulation and plasterboard. No need for foilbacked if using kingspan, although you should tape the kingspan joints with silver tape.

You could just get insulation backed plasterboard and dot/dab it to the wall. Mechanical fixing is usually used as well as the adhesive.

I've already bought the insulation & pb. (Didn't think about foilbacked till I got it back to the job. But you say it's not needed so that's great)

The Celotex website recommends battens ON TOP of the insulation before the pb. Can't see why.

Don't want to lose too much space in the room.

I'll do it like you say.

Anyway, the kspan site does it my way, albeit with insulated PB
