Escort 1.6 zetec heater not working

left the engine running on my 2001 escort running as I played around with it. Realised the fan wasn't coming on and it was by now almost into the red on the temp gauge. After trying to work out what was wrong with the fan I had to make a trip in the car. The heater which was working perfectly now would'nt produce warm air. Nothing, just not working. Blower ok just no heat. Have I broken it???

water thermostat ? (£10 diy fix)

If that dos not open at temp then the radiator wont get hot water so fan thermostat wont detect it & turn fan on & hotwater is not assed to the heater matrix?

Thanks Matty. Took thermostat out today and put it in boiling water and it opened so I'm thinking it's ok. It's bizarre it just happened over nite or after I mucked around under the bonnet.

Heaters are fed direct from the engine and rely on the stat opening.
