Hi depends on the age of your van. A lot of the early escorts use to suffer with rear light problems due to poor connection in the block bulb holders, either where the multiplug goes onto the bulb holder (corrosion) or on the block itself as it was pushed out of 1 piece of metal.
Try cleaning all the connection. (use a bit of 60 grit rubbing down paper or the like.) The other possibility which I have seen on more than one occasion is that someone has replaced a bulb recently with the wrong type ie a single filament instead of a twin or vise versa. THis can cause all sorts of weird & wonderful combinations

A high resistance earth connection to a lamp cluster can cause all sorts of odd effects, like front side lights lighting up when you brake, or the opposite side brake light flashing in time with the indicator, or the indicators stopping if you brake etc. etc.

Make sure all the connectors including any earth leads connected to the bodywork are clean and making good contact.
