Does anyone know if the external wall rendering systems offered by Renocon (and other) any good? Or will you get a better, longer lasting finish if you render the external walls with a sand-cement mix and paint over it.

Cheers, Andy

Has anyone tried mixing coloured emulsion with their render mix? Would this effect the adhesion properties?

There is no quick/cheap fix for external rendering. The traditional mix of sand- lime-cement and a light wash has sufficed for a couple of hundred years in some cases.
Do not mix anything with the mix except clean water. Render specific washes are available for after the second coat has thoroughly dried out.
Note: never apply water sealants or gloss paint to a render; it will cause you untold problems.

tim00 - do you not add anything like rendamix to reduce suction?

you wet the background or pva to reduce the suction or add a waterproofer to your scratch coat to reduce the suction
