Good morning,

The front door has old style glass which is held together with lead. some of these small pices are cracked and I want to replace with double glazed glass.

now att the moment the old glass have been putty'd in and not enough lip to put DG and a bead.

I was thinking I cut cut back the wood frame to provide enough space, maybe via router.

Its hard to explain so I hope this makes some sense

Any advice?

In principle, yes.

Removing old putty is tough work. Of course, if you're going to rout out a deeper rebate, you can use the router to help remove the hard putty. However, there will probably be rusty glazing brads to remove as well, which otherwise could chip the edges of the bit. Having said that, you could be prepared to sacrifice the router bit. (Wear eye protection.)

Obviously, you will need to calculate how much depth of wood you can remove, leaving enough thickness. One way of gaining depth for the thicker glazing panel would be to use a bolection moulding for the interior beading.

A bolection moulding is one that projects in front of the face it's attached to. If you have a router it should be possible for you to make your own.
