Hi,

Any ideas on what the problem could be with my daughters car.

The blower on the heater will only work postion 4. Nothing happens on 1,2 & 3.

According to the handbook it's one fuse for the "heater blower motor" which is OK.

I'm no mechanic but I can follow simply instructions if anyone would like to offer advice,

Thanks . John

I've got an Escort at the moment but I'll have a guess. I assume position 4 is the fastest speed? The slower speeds are usually got from switching-in different resistors to reduce the current to the motor. This is how it's done on my Escort so if your ka is the same then somewhere there will be a pack of resistors which may be in the wiring loom or mounted near the fan motor. If it's plugged into the loom then it could just be dirty pin contacts. It's more likely to be this than the switch. A Haynes manual would help by telling you where to look for resistors.

the resitor pack should be screwed to the side of the fan motor as has been said, or at least they are on the mondeo's and i cant see ford being bothered to change things that much.
The offending part are normally on the shelf items at your local dealer

in my car (nissan micra), speed 2 doesnt work. 1,3 and 4 work tho. it does have its advantages: i can use 2 as off since its closer to the 3 what do work

I too had the same problem and was at my wits end trying to find the cause. I checked the fuses, then the relays. everywhere. But my car would only blow when the heater switch was put onto number 4.
I managed to track the fault down to a loose conection block in the passenger footwell. (Just underneath and to the right of the glove box.
Hope this helps.

:D
