I would like to erect a 6ft high hit and miss fence, which will be approx 17 metres long. What size and diameter of hole should be dug, looks like 2ft of post will be in the ground.

Also, looking at other forum posts, the concrete mix goes in damp, post checked for levels, braced and then the water put in?

Is there any tips to try and ensure the post does not rot?

Hi,

The size of post hole depends very much on your local ground conditions and how exposed your fence is.
2ft deep and 1ft diameter is about typical for 'normal' conditions but for a very exposed site and soft ground make it bigger; use some larger 'half bricks' to bulk up the space.

If you saw Dragons Den there are some posts treated with sleeving around ground level where most of the rot occurs, you could try and replicate that idea or give it extra coats of wood preservative.

Also consider using the metal spikes set into the concrete post holes; using the type which you clamp the post in with two bolts so its easy to replace, though this should be less frequent if the bottom of the post is kept free of soil.
Have used this method on some of my fencing and never had to replace a post even after 15 years.

The cement, use wet or damp as is, but its normally the bagged post dry mixes you water in.
