Is there any requirement for a gas meter to be fitted to the structure of a house, instead of being fitted to the bottom shelf of a kitchen base unit?

A contractor doing a kitchen refurb has stated that the meter which has been fitted inside a base unit, and has been for years, including previous refurbs, and with no issues on annual safety checks, can not be replaced on the bottom shelf of the unit, and must be fitted to the wall at the back of the unit.

I'm not aware of any such requirement in any applicable regulations

The bracket must be secured to something, but I can't see an issue with that something being the side of a base unit.

The meter can not just sit on the shelf/bottom of the cupboard.

I gather that gas meters are not expected to be under kitchen sinks because of the risk of water causing corrosion.

Also thought that a gas meter was OK on a shelf? Many are on high level shelves in London in older houses.

Majority of them are located in the kitchen cupboards up here in social housing, no issues as far as I'm aware.

its fine to sit on a shelf aslong as its secure and there is not strain on the pipework/ana.

If you move its position or fit a bracket you need met1.

what hold the meter when the kitchen fitter removes the cupboards??

If the meter has feet then the supplier will deem it acceptable to be sat on a level surface, providing there is no stress on pipework. If the meter was fitted in the last ten years then it should at least have a bracket between the meter unions.

If the meter doesn't have feet then it needs to be fixed in place, by either fixing the top bracket to the wall behind the meter or by use of a bottom bracket which should be screwed down, screwed down is acceptable when screwed to the bottom of the cupboard shelf.

arguing the toss with the supplier over the position and perhaps your brand new 20 million pound kitchen would be futile, If you're not happy where it is then pay to have the meter moved through the gas transporter.

Could you post a picture of it?

the BS on gas meters says meters should not be sited under sinks or in cupboards storing foodstuffs

Have not seen Kirk for a while but he used to be a gas tutor.

What he quotes is usually correct.

Unfortunately we don't have free access to BS documents!

Would be interesting to see how BS catergorise this as there are millions of meters under sinks and in cupboards to store foodstuff.

BS only write their Standards documents but don't police them or comment or even answer questions on them afterwards!

There should be no water leaking under the kitchen sink, you would have more issues then just a gas meter !
