I'm tired of people moaning about 4x4s being gas guzzling unnecesary 'chelsea tractors'. Some of us who live north of Watford need them! I live 1/2 a mile off the road up a 1 in 5 loose gravel and mud track (on the welsh borders). You can't get to our house without a 4x4. My solution is a 20 + year old Suzuki SJ410, 970 cc engine and with good tuning and moderate driving I get around 38 mpg. And it didnt use up masses of resources to produce (it's virtually re-cycled). It doesn't waste energy on air con or other fancy gadgets. It does get me reliably from a-b and is fun off road. It is in my opinion a better solution than a hybrid car because they cost so much to make in terms of resources, and by the time fossil or nuclear fuels have been burnt to make the electricity they are just as polluting. anyway a hybrid wouldn't get up our track! Does anyone else go down my route? Or have interesting, unconventional green solutions? There must be other essential users of 4x4s, we aren't all posers.
