Throwing around some ideas to replace some of the walls/roof of my concrete sectional dbl garage.
Looking for opinions from those who are used to working 'subterranean'

Which would be better/cheaper below ground... :?:

Concrete lintels or 'homemade' ground beams?

There will be 8 areas to bridge between pads, max clear spans of 1800, give or take 100, although pads can be made slightly wider to suit.

So I'm looking at eight, 2.1 to 2.4 lintels (poss 140x150mm?)

Or making up and pouring 18 metres total of cage, probably 16mm longditude + 8mm link at 200mm (overkill?)

Labour costs = beer and called in favours

Have a mixer.

No time restraints. (Cages could be done one section at a time)

More info.
Due to mature trees nearby and partly to reduce spoil/digging through existing conc base.....I'm going to pour pads to support the 'new' walls, which will be 100mm dense concrete blocks. Ground beneath topsoil is firm and chalky.

Max height of walls to be 2.4m, except one gable end which will be 4m to gable (no openings on this wall)

Going to double up blocks to pillar the corners.

2 longest walls will be 4.2 and 4.8, these will be thickened midway with 140 thick blocks.

Pads under all sections that are thicker than 100mm. Same again under any areas that re taking point loads.

Walls will be taking part of roof loadings, 6x2 rafters (limited spread and no ceiling) double thickness ply covering. Felt/shingles.

NO choice of materials suggestions please!
