Hello there,

Basically I have just moved into a house which is about 15 years old. I am a bit confused how the heating system works. We have a boiler in the garage wall mounted, a water tank upstairs and 2 water containers in the loft, one small one large. I wondered if someone could explain how this system works exactly. Rather confused as the water in the loft has got all rubbish in it, dont tell me this is what we have been bathing in!!!

Cheers,
Simon.

Run the hot tap and if the tank with"rubbish " in starts to refill then yes!!

If not its the expansion tank for the heating!!

Small tank is topup for boiler, big one is for bath. Yes, they are often full of disgusting stuff, just as well you can not see what is in your cylinder. My personal opinion about these systems: out dated, inefficient, problem prone and disgusting. But most people seem to love them. strangely enough, I have never had anyone come back to me to ask if they could have their cylinder back after I converted the house to the 21st century, in other words, put in a combi.
