A lighbulb blew and tripped the upstairs lights. I have turned the trip back on but still no lights? Have tested the fuse box and there is power there, however no power is getting to the upstairs lights? There is a mixture of light fittings & spot lights on the ring & previously it was working fine.
Any ideas what the problem could be?

you may need to trip out the MCB and pull it all the way down and then reset it. Some MCB's do not reset when you simply switch them back on. otherwise, is the upstairs lighting on an RCD? the MCB and RCD may have both tripped out? im clutching at straws here, as it seems you think there is power upstairs, but signs are saying that there is not!

how did you test for power??

I have power upstairs, just no lights (i.e. the plug sockets work)
A friend who knows far more about electrics than I do (not hard!!) tested the power using a little hand held tester thing. He tested it at the fuse box where it indicated power was coming from the bit that tripped, and then he tested the wires where the light fitting had been and there was nothing? He said this indicates that the fuse has not blown in the fuse box & that it must be something else?
I'm sorry I don't know what MCB's & RCD's are?! It's sounding like I will prob have to bit the bullet & get an electrician out!

If your friend knows enough he can check in the blown fitting if there is a loose or broken wire. WITH THE POWER OFF
