My boiler, an ageing unvented Polystel, has a broken pressure release valve and leaks constantly.

My plumber tells me that becuase Polystel don't appear to be trading any more, he can't get the replacement valve and will have to fit an entirely new cylinder at a cost of £1700 or so.

Is this crazy? can a pressure valve from one company not work with a cylinder from another?

In principle you could take the performance data off the unvented unit and procure a similar specced item.

In practice we are meant to use parts tested and approved by the manufacturer for potentially dangerous things like UV cylinders.

The good news is that nearly all UV cylinder manufacturers buy their valves in off the shelf from manufacturers specialising in this equipment - such as RWC. If the part can be identified and replaced with the same OEM unit then there are no liability issues.

But I would not allow one of my engineering team to put a non original valve in an unvented cylinder where the OEM part is not available, so I can see your plumber's point of view.
