Holes at rear of gas hob

They're drilled into the rim. I'm curious about their purpose, to act as vents perhaps?

Can anyone enlighten me please?

Are they on the underside of the hob. Could they be drain holes for any spillage that got in there.

Since they're on the hob's top surface, I'll fit some small grommets to cover them. I don't want fluids dripping down into the hob and causing an issue with the workings.
