Hi,

I would appreciate some advice, if possible.

There is a loud banging noise coming from my hot water storage cylinder located in my bathroom cupboard. I have an open vented traditional hot water system which is oil fired by an ancient boiler (which has always sounded like a furnace and there has been no change there). I had an issue with the ballcock sticking in the feed expansion tank in my attic a few weeks ago and it was almost empty of water so I suppose air got in. I have sorted out the ballcock system now. Since then there has been a loud banging noise when the water in the cylinder gets up to temperature, which I assume is air in the storage cylinder? I do not know how to get the air out (if this even is the problem?). Does anyone have any ideas?

I have bled all the radiators which are working fine and I have hot water.

I have reached the sum total of my boiler knowledge and info from my DIY books. I am a fairly practical person, with plenty of tools and I would prefer to learn how to fix it myself.

Thank you!

Elin

Is there sufficient water in the system? Ballcock may now be working, but is water able to enter the system? Blocked cold feed can be a common problem, banging is often a sign of the water boiling due to poor circulation or insufficient water.

Try (with system switched off!) draining some water off and check if F&E tank refills the system as it should.
