My Hotpoint WMA33 is now 5.5 years old and has just started a loud banging on accelerating to spin and at spin speed. It can occasionally be heard at low speed as well. I spun it empty and there was no banging. I opened it up and looked / felt all over for anything loose, but with no success. When turning the drum by hand it feels a bit rough, but not obviously so. It gets used on average once a day. Is it worth to call the repairman, or just replace it ?

sounds like the bearings might have gone or the bolt that holds the driven pulled onto the back of the spider might have come loose. If its bad bearings then the washing machine needs a whole new rear tub section so your looking at a repair bill of £150-200.
