How far can I open up a fireplace?

Hi Guys

I would like to install a modern landscape gas fire into an existing chimneybreast but wanted one as wide as possible for maximum effect. The chimney measures 146cm wide, how wide can I go with the fire to still leave enough support for the new lintel? Someone told me you only need the width of a brick either side, is that true? Could I get a 130cm (w) x 30cm (h) fire in there or would a 120cm (w) or 100cm (w) fire be the maximum?

The chimney jambs should be at least 9 inch brickwork.
