Hello

I have had all the walls in my house plastered and have applied a single mist coat of emulsion after approx 4 weeks.

Is there any advice on how long I should ideally leave before applying the final top coats? The guy at my Leyland Trade shop said it can take up to 6 months for all water to evaporate and ideally I should have used something like their Super Leytex paint which allows the plaster to breath, else I can get bubbles.

I'm in no hurry to paint the top coats but would be good to know whether I should wait 4 more months before painting the top coats.

Thanks..

It’s true that a new build can take up to 12 months to fully dry out but that’s because so much water goes into the construction. No builder could wait that long before decorating a new property & the advice is usually not to redecorate with vinyl paint or stick wallpaper over it. If you’ve just had the walls re-skimmed, 10-14 days is fine; a new plaster base/render coat & skim can take up to 4 weeks so, as TheDec said, you’re fine to continue decorating.

Not sure what the guy in your Leyland Trade shop is on about, perhaps he’s trying to sell you some nice expensive special paint.
