How to face stained bricks

Hi, I've moved to a house that has some terrible mortar and paint stained brickwork that won't remove. I'm think about brick slips over the face? Is this a good idea?

What have you tried so far? Brick acid? Paint remover? Wire brush?

After having timber frames replaced with DG, I was left with gloss paint around the brickwork. I managed to sort all that, with the use of a wire brush, in a drill.
