I moved into a house that has mauve colored ceramic tile. I want to paint over it...what do i need to do, what items do i need? what, if any problems can i expect? how long will it last? will it wear off over time like spray-painted countertops? will sharp objects cause scrapes in it? :)

You can purchase Floor Paint, and suitable undercoats could be obtained from International Paints for instance. But I do not think it would be very satisfactory, and would not last long. Sharp objects would obviously cause scrapes. Could you cover it with a kitchen carpet?

as has been mentioned if you paint it:

1) paint will wear according to traffic
2) sharp objects will scratch it
3) blunt objects bill scrape it
4) duration see 1

i see you have 2 choices

learn to like the color (colour)

rip tiles up

carpet not a good idea as it may slip (but being America, you could sue the guy who fitted )
