I want to make the fire opening in my chimney breast larger as i want to fit a log burner, can i just remove brickwork & fit for eg a railway sleeper across the top to support the bricks higher up as the chimney also goes through the bedroom above & are there any other things i should be aware of?

Use a concrete lintel and then simply bolt your sleeper on as decoration.

It may not be as straight-forward as you think if you need to widen it. check out the endless old threads on this subject and come back with any specific queries.

Building regulations & a compliance certificate for the log burner would be a good start, it's controlled building work. Definitely don’t fit a railway sleeper they are full of all sorts of sheite that will start to ooze out, stink & god knows what else when it gets hot.

Read here, very similar problem;
