The (18mm) chipboard floor is a floating floor
If you stand on the end joint of the chipboard flooring is there any movement such as springy movement?

Yes there is a bit of movement.
I was trawling the intenet and came across Elastilon adhesive underlay (basic 3mm thick, I'm using 7" wide boards so do not need stronger variant) and ordered some. £4.70/m sq. from flooringco in Rusden. So its going to be a floated floor with the Elastilon as the underlay. About £50 more expensive in materials than hiring the nailer and the cost of the nails and the cost of the std underlay, but a lot quicker and no issue with the chipboard and nailing.
www.elastilon.com.
I'll let you know how I get on.

If you need help with translation of the website (English version is still awaiting translation of the instructions) just let me know :D

I know the first bit of getting the protective layer of the underlayment is the trickiest bit.
