Lead repair/replacement

We have a lead covering over our front porch which has cracked in several places. Is there a way to repair/cover the lead, bearing in mind the porch faces direct south and so gets heat/movement in the summer. If so what products will do a good job.

Or if not, is there a good alternative covering given the price of lead nowadays!

. It looks pretty much perished to me , due to age . Glassfibre with a grey gel coat I wouldn`t try and patch it , even tho` I could leadburn a patch over with a rubber expansion in it the front edge has been nailed ..I would`ve dressed it over a bullnose, and had hidden clips rip it off and fibreglass it ...in my opinion

specialist roofing co. or access to industrial quantities of mat/resin/ gelcoat. That I have , through a M8 of aM8 who builds boats...I`m a bit concerned about the window cill because I can`t see how it`s laying on/near the roofcovering from your pics That could be a naughty area to do

At present the lead comes up behind the sill.

The fibre glass thing sounds as if it could be expensive too!

A similar house along the road has tiled it, but not sure how effective that can be with virtually no slope..

well a "last chance saloon" job to save you ££ and diy`able ...you could do it with roofing felt and cold felt adhesive but just on the flat.so it can`t be seen from below.and use heavy duty mineralised felt

I have done fibre glass roofs recently, i was trained by polyroof, to fibre glass your roof you would have to remove the lead . a better solution could be to use a single ply membrane , you simply measure the length and breadth of your porch allow extra for upstands and drips you can then have the membrane made to measure. it is basically a sheet of rubber epdm or butyl it can be supplied with contact adhesive you brush or spray the adhesive onto the rubber and the lead, you then roll the rubber onto the deck and let it stick, your rubber should go up the wall at least 3 inches and 2 inches in to the gutter if you require you can get aluminum preformed edge trim to finish it. EDPM can be purchased from as little as £5 per sq m it;s guaranteed by firestones the manufacturer to last for at least 20yrs.

something to bear in mind, If you use fibre glass the resin would be fully adhered to the lead, lead expands at a lower temperture than grp, on a warm day the lead will expand at a greater rate than the grp this will eventually crack the grp.

Obviously lead should be first choice, but if price is a factor then rubber should be considered.
