We had a mixer tap on the bath and pump fitted in airing cupboard for central heating . We were alerted to a smell and noticed we have a leak. I turned the wheel and now its still leaking and dont know what position wheel should be in and how to stop leak. Please help. It is the pipe with wheel near bottom of airing cupboard and connects into big cylinder

Its probably been caused when valve has been shut and then opened again after carrying out remedial works.

Sounds like a leak on the valve spindle, best get a Plumber in and renew valve for a lever type.

Sounds like a gate valve as said the little nut on the spindle should stop it but as to position it depends what the valve is controlling, It might be a simple isolation valve which wants to be fully open and then closed just slightly (about 1/8 to 1/4 turn) to prevent it jambing. If it is on the by-pass it needs to be adjusted according to the system, if you can post some pictures with luck somebody can identify what it is for.
