Hi i am new to this site and i will try and make this as clear as i can. I removed a strip light from my loft which is operated from a switch on the landing which has another switch to operate the landing light.
When i removed the light i quickly wrote down where the wires came from and have since lost the note and got a new strip light with different connectors

Here is what i have in the loft

WIRE 1 BROWN BLUE AND EARTH WHICH COMES UP TO THE LOFT FROM THE SWITCH IN THE HALLWAY

WIRE 2 BROWN BLUE/WITH BROWN SLEEVE AND AN EARTH
THIS WIRE GOES TO THE BEDROOM LIGHT (bedroom light has never been affected by the loft light being disconnected)

The new strip light that i have only has 1 3 way connector with terminals for live earth and neutral

Any help in what wires to connect where would be greatly appreciated

Are you sure you have the wires the right way round. It would be more logical for the blue with brown sleeve to be on the wire from the switch.
But the basic concept would be...
The brown wire from the bedroom light connects to the brown wire from the switch but not into the light connector.
The blue wire from the switch goes into the "L" (but should have a brown sleeve)
The blue wire from the bedroom light connects to the "N".
Both earths, suitable screened go into the "E".

There are wiring diagrams on the wiki.

hI Steve thanks yes i did write it down wrong the blue with the sleeve comes up from the hallway switch.I am out of time for today but will isolate the power tomorrow and connect up the way you suggest , i will post to let you know how it goes. Is it not strange that the bedroom light has never been affected by these wires being disconnected ?

Thanks again

Not strange at all. That is the live & neutral feed so disconnecting them in the loft will have no effect on the bedroom light.
Those wires will be LIVE though, so take care, it is very difficult for paramedics to get a body down from a loft.

I take it that it's frowned upon to just position the stiff above the hatch and let gravity take it's course?

It's more likely to be an access problem: Have the paramedics been trained to use a ladder or do they have to wait for a specialist team to arrive?

Oops! I forgot; that would be the fire brigade --

It depends if they have had the special training for working at heights
(above 0.5mtr) regulations.

A large American went on a hunting trip, and was off out into the boondocks with a local guide, who was a lot smaller than him.

He said "I'd be the first to say I ain't in the best of shape these days - weigh nearly 300lb. How would you get me out of here if I had a heart attack or something?"

"Ah - no problem", the guide said, "last year I shot a 600lb grizzly - got him out."

"How?"

"4 trips."

Thanks to steve and all other replies job is a good one all done and i am still here to say thanks !
