Ahh I see it's Austin Mitchell, MP for Great Grimsby.. Well Last time I was in Grimsby, I can assure you there was nowt Great about it.

Ahh this person
Austin Mitchell has been the Labour MP for Grimsby since 1977.

Austin started out on the right of the Labour Party, but in recent years it has moved so far right behind him that he is now the extreme left. Considered a dangerous revolutionary because of his belief in equality, public spending and state intervention in the economy and in markets and in full employment, which is basic to socialism. Not Old Labour- positively geriatric! He lives in Grimsby, though most of his time is spent driving between Grimsby- London - Halifax.
His interests include housing; the economy; fisheries policy and New Zealand. Austin is also a keen photographer and, as Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Photography, organises the annual Jessops Parliamentary Photography Exhibition.

Austin is a member of many All-Party Parliamentary Groups, as well as being the chair of the Council Housing Group of MPs. Previously he was an academic (Nuffield College Oxford and New Zealand Universities) and a television journalist (BBC and Yorkshire Television). He presented 'Target' with Norman Tebbit on SKY from 1989 to 1998. He writes for The House Magazine, Accountancy Age and is the author of various books, some of which are collaborations with the late, great Richard Whiteley.

So a stable man whose interests are about photography and New Zealand.
Who regularly commutes and works in London for a probable fairly good salary and "directorships". Far more the good old Grimsby gives him I bet.

Oh god another nutter.

Not really.
The other major cities have not the infrastructure to cope ATM. Until recently one of the largest ISP providers in the Midlands had to use London servers and then Manchester to provide a service "North of Watford".
Traditional "hubs" have always existed "darn south" and because of the success and international travel infrastructure have continued to be so.
If and when the new rail links are ready then there could be more to argue about for the inclusion of "The North".
Can you hand on heart say "Grimsby" is ready to take on a role in the international markets as it is now?

The reason london has the infrastructure that other regions lack is because it's London which attracts most of the investment, private and public.
It's a vicious circle and has needed addressing for very many years.

AS I SAID.

There are high speed private hubs now past Manchester and one I know personally has more in mind. He had to start in London and when the fibre got past Manchester he leapt on it to get it further up. Once the communications are in place then there may well be a "fairer" spread of wealth and business.
The other stumbling block is airports.
As I mentioned the new rail links may also assist in this, as now the Eurostar is an accepted form of transport.
Its great in fact London to Paris £70 and 2 hours. Cheaper and faster than London to Northern things. Try it, it really is good, and have a glass of champers under the new glass roof over the station, really good to take the misses for a romantic weekend.

That is why, for one reason. As before the access and quality.

No London and down south do have it all a bit skewed their own way.
Its naive to think otherwise.

Take the heating supplements to old people....

For years nothing was done as elderly people oop North died of hypothermia then all of a sudden you got a snowflake on London one year and all of a sudden lets hand out £200 to everybody.

Thats just a small example of how London and its policymakers have a very insular view of the UK.

Laws that have no relevance outside of London get passed as a countrywide remit and only issues affecting London have a fair hearing timewise in Parliament.

To be honest I don't really care I am happy to live anywhere away from London where the scenery is better , the people are better and the housing and parking are better.

If London was so great then I would go there but paying extra for everything , housing , transport , food , congestion charge etc etc just to be made to feel a stranger in my own country as more than 50% of people I would travel with would be immigrants or ethnic..
It doesn't appeal to me. sorry.

I would say yes, london does suck the life out of the north, but not just the north, the rest of the country. time after time policy seems to revolve around the fact we all live in a big city, with plentiful (note i didn't use the word good!) transport links, high speed fibre broadband and plentiful public amenities.

If you live, as I chose to do in a very rural spot, there really is nothing for you in government policy.

Important distinction though, london may suck the life out its surroundings, but i have no issue at all with londoners, it truly is a great city. (i worked there for nearly 20 years)
