Hi all

I'm new to LPG, so you can treat me like an idiot :)

We've got a cooker with gas hobs / electric oven. We need to replace the flexible hose that links the gas bottle to the rigid (metal?) pipe. It's all outside. Maybe around a metre of hose. Probably less. Also the regulator is apparently a cheapy, so gonna have that replaced as well.

Just rung around for some quotes... It's coming in at £180 + VAT. Does that sound about right? I thought it would be a quick and simple job so expected much less. If there is more to the job than I realise, could anyone explain?

Does it have to be a registered LPG guy who does it? Could I do it myself with guidance? Is it a lot different to changing a bottle over?

Any help much appreciated. Can take pics if that would help.

Cheers

£180+vat is about right, assuming they're supplying the regulator and pigtails, plus most likely a bit of copper pipe and a joiner because the new connection probably won't line up with the existing one. Even quick and simple jobs require a van to be driven to you, fuel to be paid for, contribution to insurance/tax/MoT/servicing/business insurance/public liability/gas qualifications which need to be retaken every 5 years/Gas Safe registration etc etc. It could easily be an hour on site to do the job, half an hour driving to you, materials and aforementioned overheads to pay for.

Yes, you do need to be qualified to do it (and giving advice on DIY gas work is against forum rules, so you won't get help here to do it yourself).

Thanks, that's really helpful.

So when it comes to just swapping bottles over in the future, is that completely different to replacing the hose and regulator? And can that be done by anyone?

Thanks Durhamplumber. I was thinking of asking the gasman to show me how to do it while he's here.

Pigtails - wasn't sure what they are, so just had a quick look. On our current bottle there doesn't seem to be one, the regulator just sits on top of the bottle. Will that change then?

Regulator - I presume you get good and bad ones. Is it worth me checking what regulator he plans to fit?

Cheers
