Magnetic water conditioners....any one got experience?

I live in a hard water area and getting problems with scale in pipes. Could install a water softener but wondered about one of these magnetic conditioners like this one..... http://www.dutypoint.com/systems/products/29-scale-prevention/7-ec.

Does anyone have any experience of installing one of these or similar??

none of the essential minerals present in potable drinking water are removed through the treatment.

I can't see the point. If it's not removing the minerals that cause "hardness", what is it doing? Sounds like snake oil to me!
