I hope this is in the correct section - it occured to me that it could equally fall under plumbing.

What is the received wisdom on making the wall on which a shower is installed fully waterproof? For example, a shower with internal fitting connections will need holes through the wall/tiles to accommodate the hot and cold feeds.

How do you make this waterproof, to ensure that water from the shower head does not get in behind the wall mounted shower? Should you use sealant around the shower after it has been installed? Or should the shower be mounted before the tiles are put on the wall?

Any hints and tips would be welcome.

Thanks,
Rich

Use Aquapanel and let the pipe through the panel then wall tiles and sealant round the pipe joint

Most installation instructions for the showers will advise you to site the shower unit and shower head such that in normal use, the spray is not directed at the shower unit. Therefore, unless you deliberately point the shower spray at the sides of the shower unit, it's not too much of an issue.

Even if you splash water directly at the front of the unit, it can't turn corners to get to the open area at the back where the pipes come in. If you site the unit at shoulder to head height, there's little chance of water splash onto the top.
