MDF is a good material for children's furniture and can be used for some toys. It will not take as much load as plywood or solid wood, though. What were you thinking about making?

as long as you seal it with lead free paint!

Actually the paint should meet a standard called BS EN.71 pt 3 (toy standard) which is a good deal more stringent than simply "lead free" The paint should only be applied after the MDF has been sealed with something like 2 or 3 coats of MDF sealant flatted back between coats. Manuda=facture of paints with lead in has been effectively banned since the early 1980s, with the exception of some specialised industrial coatings.
