I asked if they were brick because it would be a lot stronger to simply run the bar wall to wall.
You could use a metal bar and wooden seats on each side but my preference would be key clamp style pipe and sockets.
To keep 'er indoors happy you could run some curtain rings onto it and claim it's a draught proofing measure to keep her toasty over winter.
