While driving from on the motorway between glasgow and dundee in heavy rain my driver side wiper decided to stop. Panic and some ace ventura style driving followed.

Took it to a garage and the mechanic sorted it with some drilling and cable ties.

Just wondering what is going to be the best way of sorting this, new wiper assembly, like the mechanic said or some kind of DIY fix?

Any help appreciated

You've already got a DIY fix. You'll have to replace the worn part with new for old I'm afraid.
That's a common fault on the Punto.

As above, but if you are on a budget, Toyota use a clip over this to keep it on. So if you wanted to try your local breaker for a Toyota linkage (and use the spring steel clip). Don't go to Toyota as they will need Chassis Numbers just to say hello.

Or you could try drilling through the middle of the ball and put a bolt (5-6mm diameter 'ish) large washer and a lock nut?

You could try a flanged bearing loctited into the old bush.

Otherwise secondhand linkage as suggested. I think a bolt would allow too much play.
