Hello,
I have a 160 year old house Im renovating. Today I have had a structural engineer take some measurements so that I can take out an internal wall and install 2 new steals that are supporting the 1st floor joists.

Obviously building control will want to inspect the new works being installed. Will they then expand on that and ask that the exposed beems and floor boards of the 1st floor will need comply with fire safety (ie 1/2 hour fire resistance).

Really my question is, am I opening up a can or worms when I let building control in the house and will they start insisting on other elements of the house are brought up to modern standards? or will they just deal with the new elements?

Thanks
Ian

They should only deal with new works unless there are obvious safety issues with existing structure.
