can some one please tell me if ni cad batteries always hold the charge when not in use, thanks

They do not - the charge will gradually fade, however this process takes weeks/months so not an issue in the short term.
 
I thought they had dropped off the market

with age, they hold the charge less well, and eventually die

It's all Lion or NiMHd now.
 
All rechargeables loose charge over time, but some fair better than others

I actually use a wide variety in the course of a hobby

Ni-cad are poor mans batteries.

You pay a premium for them but Lith-ion are the dogs.

Having used lith-ion i will only buy these in the future. Definitely pro's choice.
 
you need to use your nicads through at least 2 or 3 cycles a year
do not recharge unless 95-97% discharged
nicads do not like being unused for a long time in fact an unused battery is more likely to fail/ die after a couple off years where as well used batteries will last for years
