When we have our heating turned on the boiler is noisy and you can hear the water being pumped through the radiators (annoying 'wooshing sound'). We've already bled the radiators but there is not any air in the system. We have a service contract with British Gas but this problem occurred before we started the contract. They sent someone round to quote to fix it. He suggested replacing the anti gravity valve which would cost about £200 (boiler is on floor and next to wall so would require about 3 hours work) but could not guarantee this would fix it. The noise does not occur when the hot water is on only. It is a Baxi boiler with separate hot water tank (not combi) and 6 radiators. Does anyone have any suggestions? Would flushing the system help or reducing the pump speed?

Laugh laugh. That's because it would not.
It is called 'kettling' and theres nothing that can be done. I've had it myself.

You are right about the anti-gravity valve not fixing it, but if it's kettling, I've fixed a few cases. It sounds like there is gas in the pipes.

HTC, have you bled the pipework? the radiators and other bleed points need doing. The pump should be bled as well. If you have done all of this, then adding a boiler scilencing chemica to the system may help. If it does, but only reduces the noise, you may benefit from a powerflush.

We have bleed the radiators but there wasn't much air. Not sure about the pump, will try that when we get home. We'll try the anti-noise chemicals as well and see if that helps. It's certainly cheaper than the £200 to fix it!

Not to mention the £200 that probably wouldn't fix it. If it has anything to do with the antigravity valve, the valve will be making a rattling noise.
