Notching joist work around

100% agree
just checking 1.8 is support under the joists and not just the space between walls above including possible extra loading sitting on the joist underneath??
Sorry. Not sure I fully understand the question so I’ll give an overly detailed response and hope that catches it.

I’ve added some pictures. The drawing shows the layout and the first 3 joists run to 1.8m. They’re connected into a joist hanger on one side (onto wood block in the steel I beam). On the wall side by the stairs it looks like they’re just nailed in to another joist running the other way. I think this is connected into one of the longer joists.

The joists further into the room do run the full width of 4.8ish metres. They connect into the other steel (I assume, I can’t actually see it).

The roof above these is a flat felt one.

Underneath this room for the joist in question is the bathroom. I can’t see any further supports other than the darker brown wood which look like the original roof joists pre dormer conversion and some sort of metal sheeting which I’ve never seen there before.

if you are sure the floor is supported fully underneath at 1.8 then thats brilliant iff you think the unsupported span is greater then you need to check
a stud wall fixed top and bottom would at 1.8 be sufficient but needs to be left in place or other calculations needed

Ah ok. So if there is a stud wall underneath the joist the 1.8 goes into that’s fine. If not you need a stud wall on top that’s then tied into the roof joists? Or if it’s both even better?

whats on top is always just load [added weight]unless designed to take load
whats underneath can be load bearing or not so you need to work out if it is load bearing

Has the query changed now? You have a "trimmer" (or maybe a ledger if it's supported off a structural wall below it), but it doesn't affect the notching at the other end. If the joists are just nailed into the trimmer I would check that as they should be more adequate supported, eg by joist hangers.

Sorry, not familiar with the term, what do you mean by trimmer/ledger?

it looks like they’re just nailed in to another joist running the other way.

Google "trimmer' it's how they make a hole in the floor for a staircase, but I'm not sure it has any relevance to the original issue.
