As a rough guess can anyone point me in the right direction here, i am looking to span about 4m with a 200x100 oak beam. above will be a balcony. (with 6x2 joists softwood 1.2m long at 500 centres).

I can't find a span table for this size beam anywhere. it will have 100mm support either end.

I could also add a 200 x 10 Flitch beam to the back of the oak if required.

Does this sound feasible?

You'll need to pay someone to work this out. You dont really want to be chancing supports and certainly not balcony supports, and definitely not external balcony supports.

I am doing my own extension and it is single storey and flattish roof. So no weight above apart from the roof construction and covering.

I am using oak purlins to take the weight of the roof.

The engineer said i need to use 250 x 150mm purlins up to a maximum of 4.5m span. Even if i go for a 4m span i still have to use the same size. The gap between the purlins is about 1.5m

So i assure you will need the same if not a higher spec because you will be creating a balconey above and so you need to factor in the weight of people / furniture etc.

Domestic situation? That would probably be OK without the steel plate - but depends (among other things) on what weight of balustrade you have.
