Oak veneer door patchy

How do I get back to a good finish.
The door was patchy.. put on too heavy in parts.
It's been sanded with 120 paper but it's not perfect , can I rub down with white spirit or something to clean the door from all the sanding etc, basicly want to get to point to put varnish back on and not have to go through this again

varnish!!
sorted it last week
sanded down with fine grit paper , wiped down and varnished again.
looks good, but darker than rest of the doors but its inside the bathroom so its ok.
when i was varnishing it the dust from sanding was coming out the grain of the vaneer!!??

Q- About using a white spirit or similar??? Is it possible to use on a veneered door
