Outdoor PIR

Hi,

I'd like to wire up a PIR light that I bought. It just needs a permanant power supply as the PIR is integrated. It's to go on the outside of an outhouse which has a light on the ceiling. A thick grey wire runs up from the switch for this light. Can I cut this wire and put a junction box in, connecting that to the PIR? Do i have to put a fuse in? All help is appreciated.

Does the other cable run into the switch from somewhere, or to the light?

(There MUST be another cable - if you have just a light and a switch with nothing but one cable between the two then "nothing" will also describe what happens.)

You will need to know which cable is supplying the power, it is normal for it to be looped in to the light fitting rather than the switch, so breaking in to the switch cable may not be too much help.

Don't cut into that cable as the outside pir light may not work as it will require a neutral which is most prob not in that cable. It sounds like a switch drop which contains 2 lives and no neutral. Find somewhere with a live neutral and earth on lighting circuit and feed a switch from this, looping neutral in backbox switching live, then feed goes to light. Alternatively call a registered sparks as this work may be notifiable being outdoors. Cheers
