I wouldnt recommed burning them off..unless you have got very good public liability insurance..too easy to set the roof alight.

First you need to go in the roof and move any lagging out the way

Then use an electric hot air gun..less chance of a spark..but if the woods rotton you may still set it alight.

Before you go home wet it down with an hose for safety.

When i was an apprentice many years ago i was burning off some oak window sills on a cottage and they were a bit rotten. I hadnt noticed a small spark sitting in the corner. we sat in the van for dinner and when we came back half the sill had burnt away with the breeze. Got to be careful !!

Know the feeling Rob..

As an apprentice I did the same..only mine was a wooden box sash window...burnt through from one side to the other.

My other gem..luckily also as an apprentice...burning off a window, same job actually..bits were falling down onto the cill..normally on fire, every now and then id pat them out..I noticed some flames in the reflection on the glass...tapped away at the debris on the cill...still had the flames in the reflection of the window..

Only they wernt n the reflection of the window at all...they were behind the window..I had set the peoples net curtains on fire!!!

The heat from the torch had crept under the bottom sash..and wooof!...up they went!
