I’m looking to paint some MDF black. I have some layland trade oil based grey undercoat. Can I put this on bare MDF as a first coat or do I need to go with a primer first?

thanks

Hi,

It is usual to put a primer on first and then undercoat.

Without primer, the surface may be less resistant to scratches, if it is in a high traffic area and a black colour is more likely to show up any imperfections in the finish.

But if you don't fancy using a primer, do a test patch and see what happens! :)

The main problem with using UC only is that you may find that the UC soaks in too much. When you apply the top coat you may have an inconsistent sheen.

Personally- I would use a primer first.
